Black is Monica LaPlante's color. Her lyrics are dark and her sound darker; two of her three album covers are black and white, and when she came into The Current's studios to perform some new songs, her thick eyeliner matched her dark clothes and boots. This Halloween, she and her band released her third project, Noir, which (yup) means "black" in French.

Talking with Andrea Swensson, the local garage rock artist shared candid stories in the studio, sharing stories behind songs and recounting her past as a City Pages music writer (she got to interview the Magnetic Field's Stephin Merritt, who was once a music writer himself). She also performed three songs from Noir; her voice plunges on "Can't Stop" and whines during "Hope You're Alone." For more on her band, her full-length album-to-come, and the time she watched Bob Dylan perform from a cemetery, listen to the whole in-studio.
