Soul man extraordinaire Charles Bradley performs at The Current

In 2011, Charles Bradley proved that it's never too late for a musical talent to enter the ring, issuing his debut album at age 62 and winning plaudits from critics and the adoration of soul fans nationwide. Bradley had dreamed of a career as a musician ever since he witnessed the great James Brown perform at Harlem's famed Apollo Theatre in 1962, but his life took another turn, as he traveled the country working as a cook and in various other jobs. He eventually began performing as a James Brown impersonator in New York in the late '90s, ultimately getting discovered and signed to the Daptone record label.
He soon put out his first album, No Time for Dreaming, which launched his career into the stratosphere. He's spent the last couple of years touring and playing festivals, including a smoldering gig at our Public Radio Rocks stage at South by Southwest earlier this spring. Now, he's back with a sophomore effort called Victim of Love, released last month.
Charles Bradley stopped by The Current studio before his show at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. He gave a rousing performance of a few songs from the new record and talked to host Mary Lucia.
