Your Smith debuts new moniker in The Current's studio

Caroline Smith didn't think she'd ever move to Los Angeles. Raised in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, she found her place in the Minneapolis music scene with the Good Night Sleeps (Jesse Schuster, Arlen Peiffer, and David Earl). Later, she'd release Half About Being A Woman and headline First Avenue under her own name. But as she kept visiting LA to collaborate on music, an acquaintance suggested she just move there. And she did.
This year, she unveiled her new identity, Your Smith, and shared a couple of new songs from that project. When she's not working on her music, she writes for Pulse Music Group, a music publishing company that helps facilitate musicmaking. Often, she writes for other artists; sometimes, she writes with them. She walks the mile between her home and the studio.
Back in the Twin Cities to play a show, Smith recorded three songs — her Caroline Smith single "Trying Not To Love You," Your Smith single "Bad Habit," and "Ooh Wee," from the Bad Habit EP she released on Aug. 24. Schuster and Peiffer from the Good Night Sleeps join Your Smith on bass and drums, respectively, and Eric Mayson provides some gorgeous inflection on background vocals and keys. She and the band will be back in town playing First Avenue on Sept. 21.
