"With friendships is kind of where it starts and finishes in my book," David Huckfelt says, describing the genesis of his forthcoming debut solo album, Stranger Angels. That much is clear in looking at the roster of musicians on the album — people like Amelia Meath, Dave Simonett, Andrew Broder, Phil Cook — as well as the folks joining Huckfelt in studio at The Current for a session hosted by Bill DeVille: Erik Koskinen (electric guitar), Frankie Lee (bass), Scott McPherson (drums) and Sara Bischoff (backing vocals).

"Truly, it's a testament to what radiates out from the Minneapolis music scene: an unpretentiousness and an all-hands-on-deck approach to making songs come to life," Huckfelt explains. "These are a lot of friendships that I've had for many years, people whose music I've been a huge, huge fan of. And at the center of that is Mr. J.T. Bates, who produced this record."

The album was recorded at Drum Farm studio in Menomonie, Wis.; once again, Huckfelt saw it as an opportunity to bring friends together. "It really felt like if we had just been there to hang out and not even to record, we would have had a great experience," Huckfelt says, "because we were outside the city, outside of your bubble, and it felt like solace and work at the same time."

And the solo debut by Huckfelt is merely a gap in the schedule of Huckfelt's primary music endeavor, the Pines. "Probably the most inspirational artists to me are my brothers in the Pines: Alex and Benson Ramsey," Huckfelt says, once again demonstrating that friendship is at the heart of what Huckfelt does.

Huckfelt and friends will celebrate the release of Stranger Angels with a show at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis on Friday, Nov. 16.
