This week, a collection of Seattle musicians that includes bassist Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, drummer Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, and guitarist Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, surprise-released a self-titled album under the name 3rd Secret. Rounding out the lineup of 3rd Secret are guitarist Jon "Bubba" Dupree and singers Jillian Raye (not to be confused with Minneapolis musician Jillian Rae) and Jennifer Johnson.

The 11-track album from 3rd Secret features a range of musical styles, varying from acoustic soundscapes to the more grunge-y elements one might expect from musicians coming from monumental Seattle rock bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Given its roster, 3rd Secret is clearly a supergroup — that is, a band formed by musicians already well known for other projects. Some supergroups exist for a singular release, and others tend to pop up every now and then to give us another great batch of tunes.
