March 12, 2018

As PledgeHouse opens its doors for 2018 at the Blackheart Bar on Rainey Street, we'll be sharing sessions with five artists who are putting their own stamps on familiar genres.

Morgan Saint wraps warm and accessible melodies in washes of ear-catching details - from synth purrs to fingersnaps. A recent Parsons graduate, she's as sophisticated visually as she is musically. Next up will be Son Little, an R&B singer-songwriter from the City of Brotherly Love. He's an enormous talent, but you don't have to take our word for it: he's attracted gifted collaborators like Mavis Staples and the Roots.

Two of today's musical guests are emerging talents from across the pond. Nilufer Yanya, a West Londoner, draws inspiration from jazz and soul for gentle but achingly insistent songs driven by her own acoustic guitar fretwork. Singer-songwriter Jade Bird also carries a dreadnought, but leans more towards country blues - she's shared bills with Son Little and First Aid Kit.

Between Yanya and Jade Bird, Sunflower Bean will take the stage. Proud inheritors of the inimitable New York rock tradition, the power trio deliver resonant anthems with chiming guitars that will take you back to...well, name your favorite year. It might just be 2018.
