Overcoats leap into The Current studio with new music

New York band Overcoats released their first full-length album, Young, in 2017, and they have been steadily releasing singles this year, gathering them in an EP titled "The Fool," released on September 9.
Anchored by Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell, Overcoats can trace its roots as a project to 2011, when Elion and Mitchell met at Connecticut's Wesleyan University and became fast friends. "We realized quickly in our friendship that we both sang and loved to sing together," Mitchell recalls. "Neither of us had done much public singing prior to meeting each other. It definitely was kind of an awakening for both of us and an opportunity to feel comfortable and support each other in singing in public."
Since that time, they've evolved together as artists, as touring musicians and as people. In the past, they've advocated for gender equality in their work, and now they're expanding further. "Generally as we go through life, we're trying to think about equality in more universal terms that are based in people's humanity and not just their gender," Elion says.
And while it's exciting to hear the songs from the new EP, Overcoats say the music is a foretaste of more to come. "We're very concept-oriented artists," Mitchell says, "and we like to create bodies of work as a whole. Because our debut album came out almost three years ago, we wanted to introduce this new sound in a little bit of a slower fashion, and so we've given people a taste of what's to come with 'The Fool' EP, and we're hoping to put out a full-length record next year."
"All I can say," Elion adds, "is that there wouldn't be singles without something bigger coming."
