Pieta Brown and friends merge on 'Freeway'

Pieta Brown's latest album, Freeway, came from a very special place, and she created it in a unique way. Thinking back on her previous records, Brown decided who she wanted to work with and where. She instantly signed up Mike Lewis, who she trusted and worked with on previous projects. She also knew she wanted to work at Justin Vernon's April Base recording studio in Wisconsin, and she booked a very short window of time to transform her ideas into music. Brown signed up S. Carey to produce the record and to play drums, and Brown also wanted Jeremy Ylvisaker to do the guitar work, even though they had never met. And on top of that, the assembled musicians had only three days to hear Pieta Brown's musical ideas and transform them into a record.
The result is a stunning work of art that has the ingredients of friendship, trust and boundless creativity all simmered in the same pot.
Pieta Brown brought some of her besties into The Current studio to play some of those songs and to talk about the process of assembling them.
