April 26, 2022

April 26 is World Intellectual Property Day, which was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in the year 2000 to raise awareness of how patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and designs affect daily life, and to celebrate creativity and contributions made by creators and innovators. The United States Patent and Trademark Office sponsors a celebration of World IP Day every April 26. The theme for World IP Day 2022 is “IP for a Better Future: Young Innovators,” encouraging the world to leverage the innovative power of youth to solve problems and create opportunities.

In the world of music, musical and lyrical composition as forms of intellectual property are protected by copyright, so every song we play on the Coffee Break is copyrighted. But within song lyrics — especially in popular music — songwriters often mention specific product names that are protected by trademark, and that seems like a fun thing to celebrate for World Intellectual Property Day. So for today's 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear that mention specific products or other trademarked names?
