Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have used their cartoon band, Gorillaz, as a creative outlet for experimentation, fun, and friendship since 2001. Eight albums in, 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel are keeping the dystopian joy-filled experience on Cracker Island.
It doesn’t hurt that Grammy winning producer and songwriter Greg Kurstin (who’s kept Beck, Tegan and Sara, and Adele all shining with pop perfection) is on board to keep song production tight and right. Then, toss in the typical all-star cast of features. This go-round it’s reggaeton star Bad Bunny, jazz great Thundercat, and Stevie Nicks – just to name a few.
With a narrative arc about discovering the “one truth to fix the world,” Cracker Island unearths some of the best songs from Gorillaz to date. It’s your Album of the Week on The Current.
