Tonight, the MTV Video Music Awards — AKA, the VMAs — will highlight a cross section of what’s happening in popular music right now. Held once again at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, the 2023 VMAs marks the award show’s 39th year.

Historically, the show honors the artists with the best music videos as well as the best in new music in dozens of specialized categories. From Best New Artist to Best Editing in a Video, there will be plenty of opportunities for artists to shine.

This morning, let’s highlight the past winners, nominees, and memorable songs from performances.
