Coffee Break: Riot grrrls

This morning, Jill Riley spoke with Sini Anderson, who is widely known for directing The Punk Singer — a documentary about riot grrrl pioneer Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre — which will also be screened for its 10th anniversary at The Trylon Cinema in Minneapolis on Friday night (Nov. 10) as part of Sound Unseen.

Originating from the Pacific Northwest, the riot grrrl movement gave considerable momentum to third wave feminism. It also served as a strong subculture and community in which women were encouraged to express their rage, anger, and frustration with society in music.

Let’s make a playlist of bands/artists that have influenced the riot grrrl movement. Who are some of the icons? Who is carrying the torch forward?

For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, which artists/bands associated with the riot grrrl movement do you want to hear?
