Today, people across North America are looking forward to a major celestial event as the moon is set to cross the path of the sun. In the United States, a line stretching from Texas to Maine — known as the “path of totality” — is the place where people will be able to see and experience a total eclipse of the sun. The last time this happened in the U.S. was in 2017 (fun fact: the city of Carbondale, Illinois, is a geographically lucky place that was in the path of totality in 2017 and will be again this year). You can find the exact timing of the eclipse in your area on eclipse2024.org.

Here in Minnesota, weather permitting, we’ll be able to experience a partial eclipse, estimated at about 75% coverage in the Twin Cities. Our friends at MPR News know the safest way to view a solar eclipse is on the radio, so MPR News will broadcast two hours of special live coverage of the cosmic event, including live check-ins from the path of totality around the country.

Whether or not we find ourselves in the path of totality, it’s exciting to celebrate a solar eclipse. Let’s do it the best way we know how — with music.
