At a ceremony Tuesday at the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) in Nashville, Tennessee, the Americana Music Association announced its nominees for the 2024 Americana Honors and Awards. Two singer-songwriters — Sierra Ferrell and Tyler Childers — received extra attention with three nominations each for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Artist of the Year.

Ferrell, originally from West Viriginia and now based in Nashville, received the Album of the Year nomination for Trail of Flowers, which just released on March 22. Ferrell recently visited the Twin Cities for a show at First Avenue, and she also visited The Current for a studio session hosted by Jessica Paxton. Ferrell’s song, “American Dreaming,” which she performed during her set at The Current, is nominated for Song of the Year.

Childers, meanwhile, is a singer-songwriter from eastern Kentucky. His album, Rustin’ in the Rain, released Sept. 8, 2023, received the Album of the Year nomination, and its lead single, “In Your Love,” is nominated for Song of the Year. “In Your Love” received much attention for its music video, which depicted the story of a same-sex relationship between two miners who build a life together in rural Kentucky. The song was heard on The Current, and it came in at No. 51 in the Top 89 of 2023 as voted by listeners.

Other Album of the Year nominees include Brandy Clark’s self-titled album, produced by Brandi Carlile; Weathervanes by Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit; and Hurray For The Riff Raff’s The Past Is Still Alive, which was produced by Brad Cook — who also produced Waxahatchee’s album Tigers Blood. Although Tigers Blood was not nominated for Album of the Year, Waxahatchee’s song “Right Back To It” (featuring MJ Lenderman) received a nomination for Song of the Year.

The 2024 Awards & Honors nomination ceremony in Nashville was hosted by Gina Miller of MNRK Music Group, an independent music company that manages artists, publishing and record labels. The ceremony included performances by Ferrell, The War and Treaty (nominated for Duo/Group of the Year), Megan McCormick (nominated for Instrumentalist of the Year), and Sista Strings, who have performed and recorded with Allison Russell, who is among the Artist of the Year nominees.
